Opelika Sportsplex and Aquatic Center

Project:  Opelika Sportsplex and Aquatic Center

Size: 72,000 sq. ft. of new construction, a multi-use athletic facility with full-sized gym, pool , indoor walking/running track, three-field soccer complex and other structures.

Coatings: Painting and coatings specifications called for more than a dozen different architectural and high performance coatings systems to be applied to more than two dozen different substrates.  Coatings durability was a key concern to minimize facility maintenance, while preserving the aesthetic of the design scheme. High performance protective coatings and polymer coatings were specified in to the Aquatic Center, which included roof structure, concrete and masonry walls, concrete floor surfaces and pool equipment that are continuously exposed to pool chemicals in a humid environment.

Special issues:  Working to maximize cooperation with other trades and contractors and minimize conflicts during the 517 days on the job site.

Awards:  This project won both an Associated Builders and Contractors Excellence in Construction award, and the SSPC Society for Protective Coatings Crone Knoy Award for outstanding achievement in commercial or coatings work that demonstrates innovation, durability or utility. The qualities that may represent outstanding achievement in this area include excellence in craftsmanship or execution of work, use of state of the art techniques or products to creatively solve problems or provide long-term service.
